I'm looking to buy a second hand car (my first car) but have absolutely no idea which model and what should I look/ look out for?

Mainly to drive to work (11km one way)
Will rarely be carrying passengers (so number of doors not really a concern)

I'll probably replace the car in 4-5years time.
Prefer a small-med / med car
Automatic
Preferably around $10k but can stretch to $15-18k

So I want something that is economical (+ low maintenance cost) and hopefully with a lower depreciation rate.

Could you please provide me some suggestions??

Thank you.

I have listed a couple of cars that may appeal. Because you have said the car will be used mainly for short trips I have concentrated on the smaller vehicles.

  • Suzuki Swift - NZ's best selling car this calendar year to date.
  • Toyota Yaris/Echo - Reliable and comes in either 3 or 5 door configurations.
  • Hyundai Getz - Great value for money.
  • Daihatsu Sirion - Part of the Toyota family so reliability a given for this model.
  • Kia Picanto - You can buy a brand new Picanto (1.2litre) for a little over 18K. This vehicle has just been launched onto the NZ market and has the most up to date features fitted as standard. You may even buy a ex demonstrator cheaper. Well worth a look.

Have a look at these vehicles and come back to me with any questions.

Thanks for the fast response.

Would these small sized cars sway in strong wind (i.e in Wellington)?
I was in a small-sized car before and it swayed quite a bit in strong winds.

The short distances for only be for 1 year, and would probably double for thereon in.

What are some medium sized cars you would suggest?? Would like to look at all the options and find what suits.

Are maintenance for cars generally the same when comparing small and medium sized cars?

What's the average yearly maintenance costs?

Thanks.

Check out the link below to a similiar Q&A but more focued on Compact cars.

High winds are certainly going to affect smaller cars more than bigger and heavier ones but you have to draw the line somewhere.

You could allow around $600 per year for regular maintenance and minor repairs for both a small and medium vehicle.
