Hi. I need to get a small hatchback for my new teen driver, I was looking at a 2012 Nissan Note (1.2 engine / 4 star safety), but my mechanic has warned me off them due to the CVT transmission. What would be another option that would be good value for around $7.5k and economical for a new driver?

A few options come to mind, however most are European cars however typically they may not be the most reliable as they age (VW Golf, BMW 1-Series).
