Having recently developed a disability that means I can't walk very far I am finding myself looking for new and not so expensive ways to get to work as I can't make the distance to & from the usual public transport method.
I already own a car but I hate battling Auckland traffic & the costs associated with that, my employer also charges for the privilege of bringing a car to work and spots near my office are also a struggle to find since we are based in the city.
I'm wondering if there are effective options that don't cost the earth to run & keep!
I'd like to achieve that without drowning myself in the petrol bill of using the car multiple days of the week but likewise I don't want to give up the size & space I need on occasion to downsize. 2 WOFs and Rego's is going to be a drag but as its looking like one of the few options to get myself there.
The safest options of electric 'kick' scooters are too heavy for me to lift onto public transport and I already have enough issues that I don't want to buy cheap & light which compromises on safety. So it leaves me pondering about larger motorized options...
Scooter vs Car, Petrol vs Electric...
I wouldn't have the foggiest idea where to start with looking at the likes of a 'moped' scooter (thinking there might be a few more options to stash one), what do you advise a novice to look for - especially if its was electric, let alone petrol.
Or do you think a small runabout car might be a safer option and what do you advise on that front?
I'm also open to any creative ideas that jump to mind!
Hi there,
Small mopeds don't require a regular wof, just registration and are easy to ride and park- however you are exposed to the elements and have to navigate busy traffic which can be daunting on a moped, but they are also cheap to run, and you can buy used petrol for under $1,000 and a new 'e' one will cost around $4k https://www.zoopa.nz/
Small car options could include the Suzuki Swift, Toyota Yaris, or Mitsubishi Mirage with some European options of VW Polo or Golf also popular. You can find out about used car safety here: https://rightcar.govt.nz/
