Now that some banks don't issue or accept cheques, is there any safe alternative to pay for a vehicle bought privately.
I personally don't feel comfortable doing a bank transfer of a large amount, or carrying large amounts of cash. Bank cheques were ideal.

Bank transfer would be the safest method. Services like Paypal require both parties to have an account, which is not always convenient.
If both parties bank worth the same bank then the funds will generally transfer on the spot.
I had spoken with a buyer recently who opened a bank account with same bank the seller uses and only had the purchase amount put it and then transferred the funds instantly at the time of purchase.
