Hi I have looked at a 2006 Toyota Vitz - Automatic - 51000K on the clock, which I may potentially purchase.

Is there anything that I need to watch out for eg
* Are they rust prone - if so where does rust typically appear?
* It's a CVT transmission apparently - is that ok (I don't know anything about that)
*Are they reliable cars?
*Does it have a chain timing belt?
* Is there anything I should be aware of with this year/model?

The purchase would be through a dealer.

Thanks very much

Hi there,
These cars are very popular because they are reliable and cheap to run, repair and service. They are not usually known for body rust issues, with the underside condition dependant on it's use over the last 14 years.
I recommend having the car inspected before purchase which will give more insight into the vehicle condition , transmission operation and cambelt or chain question. https://www.aa.co.nz/cars/buying-a-car/car-buying-guide/pre-purchase-vehicle-inspections/
Safety technology and ratings can be lacking for older imports as seen here: https://rightcar.govt.nz/vehicle-search-results?q=1|40||2|1634||&d=Toyota%20VITZ.
We recommend buying the safest car your budget allows.

I appreciate your input, and yes I definitely intend to have an AA inspection done, thanks.
