It's hard to put answers to these questions as they are very broad and reflective on personal preference, budget, lifestyle and type of driving you will do and the surfaces driven.
Diesel engines have good torque (pulling power) good for hills and boat ramps. You can also travel further on a tank of fuel, but overall will cost very similar to run as a petrol.
Transmission is personal preference, and how you like to drive. CVT transmissions can be a bit problematic in some vehicles, but 1,200kg shouldn't put much load on one in good condition.
