Bit of background: It has done 130000kms chain driven, imported in 2017 and1 NZ owner since then. Price is $7000 from a dealer. Service history unknown.

I am particularly interested in this model because of its safety features like curtain airbags and ESC. I only drive around 5000kms a year and mostly bike in the town.

What is the reputation of these engines?

Anything that I need to be aware of before buying, like likely issues in future, maintenance, what petrol does it take 91/95, etc?

Any other recommended models in that price range would be great?

Thank you

Hi there,
Subaru's are great cars, the 2.5 is a little bit delicate in the fact that it has a potential for head gasket issues if overheated. So I recommend the heater core needs to be checked and cleaned and or bypass "T" fittings added to the heater hoses as a pre- caution if the system looks a bit blocked. The car lists 91 octane fuel can be used. Honda Accord Euro, Toyota Mark X, BMW 3-series, Audi A4 could be similar options.

Thanks for the response Cade. Is the head gasket issue something that can be found using AA pre purchase inspection?

How much does it roughly cost to do the work you explained? check, clean and bypass the fittings?

Also, cost to completely replace head gasket please?

Thanks

If the vehicle has been looked after, it shouldn't need any of this, but it something to look into or keep in mind.
Head gaskets are a big job and require the engine to be removed for disassembly, so I wouldn't expect much change from a few thousand dollars.
I would say a heater flush and fittings added (this was a trick we used to do when I worked for a Subaru workshop) shouldn't cost more two hundred dollars.
If the vehicle is displaying a blown head gasket as evidenced by combustion gases in the cooling system, this is tested for at PPI.
An overheat doesn't always translate into immediate blown gaskets but as with any car, it could certainly be compromised and only a matter of time before it might show it.
