Our 2006 Subaru Forester has just hit 200,000 km and has a leaking head gasket. Mechanic advised that the cost to fix will be thousands. We have bought a new car, so this is now a second car that is not used as often. Someone pointed me in the direction of thermalweld head gasket repair which sounds too good to be true, although it would be great if it was true. Is there any information on whether these products work? Even if it is only a short-term fix, is there any harm in doing this?

Hi there,
I would see these types of "repair in a bottle" as a more of a temporary to get you out of trouble remedy than a permanent repair. It works on some and not on others, you may not know until you try. However as my time as a Subaru Mechanic, there is always a reason why a head gasket blows and other areas of the vehicle might need attention-(because of age and km's) heater core blockages, thermostat, Waterpump etc. There is no way of knowing if the product can fill a gap in a headgasket, what else would could it block in the engine.
