Sadly it is time to upgrade my 2003 Mazda Tribute. I have thoroughly enjoyed owing an SVU and am loathe to go back to a 'regular' car. What are my options? Budget is $15k. Vehicle needs to be fuel efficient & roomy enough to accommodate sports gear. I do the occasional trips away .

You may want to look at a Mazda 6/Atenza or smaller Mazda 3/Axela as they are both very good options and you should find something within the price range.
