Thanks for that, one more question, would you say later model Nissan Primeras are a good vehicle? The ones that are 2001-2004?

In general I like the Nissan product especially as a good value for money used car. However I draw the line with the Primera of this age. It will no doubt be fitted with a CVT transmission which is best avoided.

Nissan yes, but this age Primera, no.

Sorry me again, would you say Toyota Opas are reliable enough? What about Nissan Wingroads? Could you please specify which years if you think they're good cars. Thanks.

In a nutshell they are OK but I would try and avoid the Opa if the one you were interested in was fitted with the 2.0 litre D4 engine.

A pre purchase inspection should highlight any major mechanical issues with either vehicle.

I've heard nothing but bad things about CRV - problems galore. I am just about to purchase a Rav4 but they are quite small, I tried an auto but not so powerful on the hills Nissan Wingroad´s are gutless. My partner has a Terrano which is awesome as but is quite guzzily on petrol but you can buy ones with a lower cc rating. I find consumer.org.nz is good - they surveyed 200 cars and have put on there the worth considering ones and a blurb on the cars they tested. I found this helped when choosing a car to view. I´d go Rav4. Only thing with Nissan´s except the Terrano is that they are a camchain so one less expense on the car.

The best thing about Rav4 is there are so many parts available for them new and second hand that they end up being cheaper to maintain in the long run then most other small 4WDs

The questions is, why do you need a 4 wheel drive cat around the Northshore? Hey if you can afford an Audi go for it, but a 4 wheel drive, ask yourself why. Many better options will take the dogs and kayak.

Good hunting, I own a falcon station so its low on economy but great on getting around with various loads. Work backwards. Fill the need and see what car you actually finish up with rather than starting with the need for 4 wheel drive. let the process determine that.
