So after of about a week on trademe, I found 3 cars from private owners that seem to suit my needs,

the first is a 2008 Mazda6 GSX, with 140000 km, 3rd owner (NZ new) regularly serviced at AA, it is well maintained and the only problem seemed to be its tires worn out and a rusty brake caliper. $6500

the second is a 2008 Mazda Atenza, with 170000 km, 2nd owner (imported), they don't have the AA service records, but claims to be regularly serviced and has done an AA platinum service inspection 3 months ago, with apparently no known faults, $6000

The third is a 2008 Toyota Mark X imported (first owner), with full service records and 100000 km on the clock, but I'm unsure about the legitimacy of the odometer. they are willing to go around $6200

All help will be appreciated, I'm quite new to this and just don't want to buy a lemon. Thanks alot !

Out of these three my pick would hands down be the NZ new Mazda 6, as you have more chance of knowing the mileage, safety ratings, and service history. All these cars are fairly reliable, but there is a certain amount of unknowns more so with imports. However, you do tend to pay more initially to buy NZ new.
