Hello there... we are needing to replace our car and so are just after some advice on which car would be more mechanically sound? Are there any typical issues we should be aware of with either? We are on a budget and so want to make a sensible choice to try and avoid any major costs on repairs in the future.

Also wondering if both could tow a trailer?

Both these vehicles are very similar, the CVT transmission may be more reliable in the Toyota but other than that seem to both acceptable MPV's.
A thorough inspection is recommended to obtain an Insight as to how the vehicle has been treated.
Most Japanese vehicles don't have spec information available and wouldn't have tow ratings. You may be able to have a tow bar manufactured, but as a general rule most CVT transmissions don't like towing much more than a bike or garden trailer.
