Hi

We are looking at buying a Toyota Vitz spending around $4,000 to $5,000 dollars for year range 2008 and newer. Can you give us any advice as to what to watch out for? We are aware that we should avoid CVT transmission-do Vitz come with other transmissions? Also, we are aware of some cars, when they reach 100k there is some work that needs to be done on the gearbox (I forgot the name). Are there any kilometer milestone issues we should watch for on the Vitz.

Thanks a lot

Hi there,
The Vitz mostly comes with the CVT transmission, but are not known for problems/complaints unlike a Nissan or Honda CVT of the same age period.
100km is usually a milestone when a vehicle requires every filter and fluid to be serviced or replaced. And also most Japanese vehicles with a cambelt would require it to be replaced by this time.
The Vitz is very rarely complained about and has been a very good imported vehicle choice.

Thank you - one further question - the car we are looking at has a chain? not a cam belt - and has done just over 100km Yr2003 - do chains need replacing or anything else we should look out for here?

Also - the seller has advised this: Mechanic said it has a faulty or dirty air-flow sensor. This is apparently pretty common, and can be cleaned or replaced, however isn't essential and seems to run fine as it is.

Is this a critical piece and expensive to repair/replace?

Many thanks

Hi there,
Timing chains don't have a replacement interval and are usually pretty trouble free. Usually the first thing to be done is to clean the airflow sensor, but could be a little expensive to buy on new from Toyota- but I recommend pricing one just in case it does give trouble. The vehicle will run quite rough if this sensor faults.
