I'd like to buy an american car that is already here in NZ (Mustang 2005-2009) so I am not importing it. If the car has been in the country for 4 years or more, do I need a LHD permit? Or I can buy it and drive it?
If the car has just arrived to the country, in that case I know I have to process a LHD permit with NZTA, but I am an overseas person and I don't have residency visa but I'm working and residing in NZ for almost 4 years now. Can I process that LHD permit? because one restriction is to be a NZ citizen or resident, but is not clear about if being resident means holding a resident visa, or living and working here. Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
The LH drive permit is required when a vehicle is imported into NZ and is to be certified for the road. Once the vehicle has been here 4 years, the original permit holder can sell the vehicle and no further permits are required.

Thanks a lot for your fast response.
And my last question about this is, do you know if I can process a LHD permit without holding a residence visa? Or may be should I ask to NZTA to be sure? There is a lot of cars advertised by dealers/importers that have been just imported and not registered yet because the buyer has to do that. Cheers!

Hi there,
It would be best to contact the NZTA as they are the ones who grant the permit. Send an email to: assessments@nzta.govt.nz including all the particulars of the vehicle that would normally be required when applying for the permit.
