I was looking at a 4wd Toyota Avensis wagon (about 2006) for towing a lightweight pop-top camper but have read of the problems with the D4 VVTI engine. I looked at a Mazda Atenza/6 but have ben put off by the relatively high fuel consumption compared to a 2 litre Subaru Legacy. Do you consider a 2 litre Legacy suitable for towing a pop-top? Thank you.

Hi there,
The Legacy would be a good choice, however the boxer engine is also not known for great fuel economy. But you have 4wd road handling confidence, and yes better than the D4 engine. As with any vehicle maintenance is key, and checking to see how well the maintenance has been carried out. Cambelt, driveline fluids replacement ect.
