I am looking for a small hatchback around $5,000. I was interested in the Nissan Tida and Note until I found out about the problems with the cvt transmission. Do other makes with the cvt around the years 2004-2007 have trouble with this type of transmission like the nissan does? What make would you recommend that is reliable and also has a reasonable safety rating?

If reliability is key, then a few vehicles come to mind. Toyota Corolla/ Allex, Runx or Toyota Vitz. Suzuki Swift and Mazda Demio are other good options.
However the rightcar used car safety ratings have 'top picks' and 'good' rated vehicles which are mostly European vehicles from 2004 like Audi A3, BMW 1-series, VW Golf and Ford Focus (09-)with the exception in the mix being a Kia Cerato (09-).
