Good morning, I'm going to sell a car on Trade Me on behalf of an friend who has recently moved to overseas and his NZ driver license has expired few days ago. The car is registered in his name. I understand that to change the ownership online requires both the registered owners and new owners drivers license numbers to be entered. I assume that because the registered owner 's driver license has expired that he won't be able to change the ownership online, is this correct? On the other hand, he has visited AA before he left and been advised that he could cancel the car registration online while he wants, and the new owner can register it online too once trade is done. But he could not find this link/info via website. Can i please seek your advise what should he or I do for this situation if car sold ? (how to transfer the ownership if deal done) Thank you!

Hi there,
In this case, it's quite easy. Once the vehicle is sold, the new owner is to go online and pay the $8 and transfer the responsibility of the vehicle into their name. I would encourage the buyer to do this before driving away in the vehicle.
Once this is done, there is no need for the seller to do anything.
Here is the link for the buyer: https://transact.nzta.govt.nz/transactions/NoticeOfAcquisition/entry
