Hi,

I am narrowing down my options between a mark x zio and subaru forester/outback to buy. I dont understand when people say its a CVT. I mean what are you looking for before owning a CVT. How reliable are the boxer engines in comparison. I drive a lot, about 2k a month as I do sales. Which would be a better buy. Any advice much appreciated.

Hi there,
I've received no bad reports on the Mark X and on paper they look like a good vehicle.
Foresters and Outbacks are also good as an AWD, not the most fuel efficient but good in most other ways. The boxer engine is great, the 2.5ltr engine can easily blow head gaskets if they ever overheat, this is often due to a poorly maintained or blocked cooling system/ heater core. CVT is essentially a one-speed transmission which people either love or hate due to its operation, low tow ratings and expensive cost of repairs.

Hi,

Thank you. Is there a way to test cvt condition by doing a transmission test or something?. The vehicle I have identified has 137kms and was advise by dealer its alright being a toyota and they last. However I am being cautious. Would you be able to advise worst case scenario for cvt repairs, is it something on the transmission valve or something major.

Toyota didn't really have many issues with their CVTS, neither did Subaru. But shuddering on take-off was a common complaint or the feeling of slipping.
The repairs range from a fluid change, computer reset, to bearings and clutches and can get into the thousands of dollars.

Thanks Cade for this.
