I've been reading about these cars with CVT instead of the standard transmission but all the comments I've seen have been about older vehicles. I'm looking at a 2007 which is new into NZ and around 50,000km. It's got an all good report from AA (the dealer is an AA Acredited) but I'm still a bit nervous about the CVT. I know early 2000s they were not recommended but wonder if it was improved by 2007.

The Toyota CVT transmission has not really been a problem unlike Nissan or Honda of the same year period.
So I think the Vitz is pretty good choice.
