Looking for a reliable small stationwagon with 5 star safety rating and decent fuel economy. Am considering VW Golf 1.4 turbo and Hyundai i30 (probably 2L rather than 1.6), various models 2010 - 2012 in the $9000 to $11,00 price bracket. Would appreciate advice (eg some Golf models are described as "single turbo" rather than twin; and all the Golfs are imported as opposed to NZ new Hyundais). Do you think these cars offer good value for money, subject to full check of individual vehicle?

Hi there,
If you are looking at a Golf it would be best to try and stay away from the twin charged versions as I have heard they can be a bit problematic. Hyundai i30 is not too bad a vehicle, but possibly not very comparable to the Golf and the Auto is only 4-speed which some might find annoying.
The VW will be more sporty, drive and handle well, but could cost more in maintenance and repairs. The Hyundai should be reliable and a good NZ new vehicle that shouldn't need too much spent other than servicing costs.
