Hi - I have a 2011 Kia Sportage 2.0 and unfortunately the engine seized at 110,000km. This was due to the oil not being changed in 2 years - admittedly my fault (made redundant and had to cut costs but a very poor short term decision). What can I expect for the cost of a second hand/similar km engine. I have been quoted 5 figure sums from dealers and being told the car is worth only $3,000 as it stands. I need someone to sense check this please as it has come as somewhat of a shock. Advice would be really appreciated. I have started ringing round the wreckers and no joy as yet.

Hi there,
This is a very unfortunate situation to be in. Vehicles requiring repair are worth very little, and considering options will be needed. It is very common for even a used engine replacement to be in the thousands, simply because it's not just the engine swap required. Often a cambelt, waterpump, radiator flush, coolant, engine oil and filter ect that will also be required. The cost soon adds up, but if the car is worth 13k running and 3k not then you have a 10k window to spend before actually losing out totally.
Only a parts supplier would be able to give you an engine price and this will depend of if one can be found and what they are asking for it.
