Driving twice a week from Auckland to Rotorua.
Considering reliability, durability, fuel economy and comfort.
Only two passengers will be using the car.

One that comes to mind is the NZ new Mazda 3 2008/ 2009 or an import Axela 2010.

I would lean towards the NZ new 2.0ltr for travelling distances and good engine response to hills and passing.
The 1.5 will be good on fuel for round town driving, but might struggle when loaded up.
