We are buying a used car from a dealer and noticed the car is behind in its RUC - what is the dealers responsibility around this? They will get a new WOF done but we didn't realise the RUC was behind - haven't completed the purchase yet.

Hi there,
If the dealer doesn't update the RUC as part of the sale, then it will fall to you to pay the backlog when you do purchase some.
This is taken from NZTA information: The Road User Charges Act 2012 requires a vehicle that is subject to RUC to have a valid RUC licence when a new owner takes possession. If it doesn’t, the seller is committing an offence, and the new owner may become liable for the outstanding fees. It’s recommended that unpaid RUC is taken into account when establishing the sale price.
