I am not very good at sensing when I have drifted above the speed limit on the open road. I am not deliberately speeding and want to be a safer driver (as well as avoiding speeding tickets). I am keen to purchase a warning device to stop this from happening - I think what I am looking for is simply a speed alarm (manual) rather than an intelligent speed alert system. Can you direct me to where I might be able to obtain a simple device that doesn't require an iPhone or GPS. I have not been able to find anything on line within NZ but think I am looking for something like SpeedWatcher GI that I found online available in USA that you can just plug into cigarette lighter and presumably you just set the speed at which you want the alarm to trigger.

You should contact Robinson Instruments who can install an overspeed warning device to your vehicle. However, I suspect a GPS/Navigation device will be the cheaper option.

I agree with the GPS idea - mine warns me when I have gone over the speed limit even when I'm not travelling a specific route. You can usually set them to beep or warn you so many kms over or under so you know to adjust your speed. It also does occasional speed checks on long journeys and warns about traffic cameras. And of course when you keep it updated it knows the right speed in different areas so even if your speeding in 50km zone it will let you know. Mine is a Navman and I know Tomtoms do the same. Really helpful, especially with the 4km crack down. I find them really helpful as I also tend to drift over the limit without realising! You can get a GPS with lifetime map upgrades for around $130 nowadays too.
