Recently I traded my faithful little Corolla hatch on a RAV4 (must be getting delusions of teenage adventures in my declining years). I live in a mostly rural area and hard plastic shields over the Corolla's headlights got well battered by flying stones over the years. They got cracked and chipped but many times saved my headlights. Now I am looking for something similar for the RAV4. The lenses are actually glass so I am unsure whether my glass cover in my insurance will include them (must ask after the holiday period). All I can find on line is something called a skin, like a thin plastic film that you stick on the headlight itself. Has this replaced the old hard plastic shields, and how effective are they against flying stones from trucks, tractors, etc? Living where I do I can't just walk into my local SuperCheap Auto and ask them. Thanks for any comments.

A thin plastic film will not protect the headlight from damage that can be caused by a stone or similar object; the adhesive film might only keep the glass together but the damage will be done. The hard plastic shields are still available and is the better option. Repco and Supercheap Auto sell the hard plastic headlight protectors.

That's great to know. Thank you for your helpful reply. Next time I am Dunedin I will try those places for what I need. I looked all over the Supercheap Auto web site but couldn't find the hard protectors, so maybe I missed them.

Kind regards, Peter

You should consider contacting the retailer in advance to ensure they have the correct type for your vehicle in stock and this will give them enough time to order them if necessary. You can also have a look at this link for another company that sells these items.
