Do I put snow chains on the front or back wheels of a Toyota Hilux Surf in 4WD?

A Four Wheel Drive Vehicle should have chains fitted to all wheels.
This allows the vehicle to transmit power to all wheels with similar traction being gained by each wheel, preventing uneven loading on the drivelines and transmission.
Similar thinking to having your 4 Wheel Drive fitted with the right size wheels and tyres to alleviate uneven loading.
What if you have a single set i.e. don have a set for all four wheels, then what is the best?
Thanks
Stephen
The only correct answer is you should fit chains to all four wheels.
Everything else is an opinion and a compromise which can become very controversial and debatable.
There is a strong opinion that suggests when travelling uphill the chains go to the back, and when travelling downhill they should be placed on the front.
To help with steering control the front also gets the nod when travelling on the flat.
It never hurts to get the opinion of the particular vehicle distributor in NZ or their local agent. They may have very strong views on fitting two chains only and at the end of the day their recommendations should be followed and be final.
