I am considering purchasing an automatic 2.7 litre Hyundai Tucson 4x4 to tow a caravan with a gross weight of 1400kg.

It does not have an auto-trans cooler and the dealer states it does not need one for that weight.

Your opinion would be appreciated.

You can only be guided by the dealer and provided his answer is based on the official Hyundai Head Official recommendation then you have to believe no oil cooler is required.

Be careful getting other opinions as some aftermarket oil coolers may in fact restrict the flow of oil and in turn cause an overheating problem.

One of the key driving tips when towing with an automatic is to keep the engine revs high.

Transmissions rely on oil pressure to operate which is driven from the engine, so by keeping the revs up ensures oil pressure and temperature are not compromised. This may mean manually moving and holding the transmission in a lower gear when towing over hilly terrain for example.

Also make sure the tow bar is adequate for the job. I don't believe you can beat a genuine manufacturers tow bar to be honest. It may cost you more but well worth the extra expense.

The 2.7 litre Tucson is a very nice vehicle but don't expect great fuel consumption when towing.
