What is the best way to avoid the greasy smears that wipers leave? I was once told to wipe lemon on the blades but there must be a better way?

Often its best to start with throwing away the wiper rubbers and buying genuine or approved after market replacements.
How you clean the glass itself is open for debate. A visit to your nearest auto glass supplier (Smith & Smith) may be helpful.
For me, I give the windscreen a good wash as part of my normal car wash regime and then use a standard household glass cleaner on the windscreen.
