hi there, I recently bought a 2001 Nissan, how often should I get it tuned up and what is involved in a tune up? Also, how much should I expect to pay? Many thanks
A tune-up these days is basically a check of spark plugs and air filter element. A fuel filter every 50K is not a bad idea if it is easy to access.
Some garages may want to scan the computer for faults but if the engine management light is not staying on and the car is performing OK it can be a unnecessary on-sell.
Spark plugs these days last upwards of 40K and air filters have no set replacement time.
If the engine is running erratically then it’s a different ball game.
Costs can vary; you don’t say what model Nissan you have. If it’s a Maxima with a V6 engine for example then spark plug removal is a major job. Long life plugs are usually fitted to these vehicles which should last up to 100K but they are very expensive.
Hard to even estimate a cost without knowing more detail. Best you ring around and ask for an estimate and compare prices.
To be fair to any garage, if they have no past work history to look back on then they may want to give the engine the once over depending on its general condition.
