PetrolWatch January 2006

A rotten month for motorists!

Petrol prices increased three times during January, with AA PetrolWatch recording a 12 cent per litre increase in prices. However, prices dropped 3 cents per litre on Monday 30 January, to end at 144.9 per litre for 91 octane.

Commenting on the latest decrease in prices AA Motoring Affairs Manager, Mike Noon, says “it’s good to see that volatile prices mean that prices can come down as well as go up, we were starting to wonder!”

“While it was pleasing to see the latest decrease, the AA believes there is still room for prices to reduce further.”

The price of diesel also rose 12 cents per litre during the month, closing at a national average of 105.2 cents per litre.

“Diesel users were not as lucky as petrol users as they did not get a price decrease on 30 January. Overall, January was a rotten month for motorists with petrol increasing 9 cents per litre and diesel 12 cents per litre,” says Mr Noon.

Smooth driving saves you money and reduces fuel consumption
The AA reminds drivers that simple adjustments to their driving style will help reduce their fuel consumption, saving them money and help offset some of the impact of price increases.

“One of the best things you can do to control your fuel costs is to drive smoothly. Research has shown that if you avoid rapid acceleration and deceleration, and keep speed down, you can save up to 40 per cent of fuel consumption,” Mr Noon says.
