Our History

Founded in 1903, the Association started as a small group of motoring enthusiasts in Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau, created by eye surgeon Dr George Thomas Humphrey de Clive-Lowe. Over the next couple of decades, it expanded to 15 regional clubs, all with a focus on providing roadside assistance and advocating for driver safety and motorists’ interests.

In 1991 those clubs were consolidated into what we now know as the New Zealand Automobile Association - a club that has a strong Membership base.

He Ngākau

The name of our office, He Ngākau, was gifted to us by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei when we moved into the building in early 2024.

He Ngākau, meaning "The Heart" in English, perfectly embodies the essence and core values of the AA. Just as the heart is central to our existence, He Ngākau symbolises the central hub of creativity, collaboration, and innovation.

He Ngākau reflects our commitment to the continued evolution of our service and brand, fostering a vibrant and nurturing work environment where ideas are nurtured and brought to life, for the benefit of all Members.
